We are now four years into our farm adventure and boy we have learned a lot! Author Malcolm Gladwell claimed that it takes ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field. Since I (this is Farmer Craig speaking – ok writing) work on average 80+ hours a week with no vacations, I have accumulated approximately 16,640 hours of farm experience. So do I feel like an expert – sure, why not – call me an expert! The interesting thing about dreaming of being a farmer is how easy it is overlook that farming isn’t all about feeding and petting your animals. Farmers must be the masters of multi-tasking – a true generalist and an expert of nothing specific. On any given day, I’m a mechanic, carpenter, plumber, veterinarian, accountant, website designer, social-media marketer, delivery person, tour guide, logger, sawyer and more. This level of multi-tasking is why farming is so difficult. Can one reasonably expect to be able to build a barn and a website? Well to toot my own horn I can do both – now – after many hours of trial and error. Did I mention crisis management? There is a lot of that too.
My goal with this blog is two fold: 1) as a mechanism to share our farm stories to keep you folks engaged in our farm. Farming after all is all about community. Without you folks this farm would not exist, and 2) to provide some expertise to folks that are new to farming, want to get into farming, or want to see a different way to farm. Our hope is that you will in return engage through commenting, by asking questions and sharing your experiences so that we can learn from you! More to come! I love sharing information about farming as much as I love to farm. Now all I need to do is figure out how to channel that into a blog. If you are reading this – I have figured it out!
