The Farm Name
Interestingly enough coming up with a farm name may have been one of the most difficult tasks in starting a farm. We wanted a name that was unique, easy to spell, easy to “Google”, and described our values and our farming practices. After spending months (actually we started brainstorming names years before we bought the farm) - we came up with Greener Days Farm. Our name is based on three principles:
Environment:
We view being green as a farmer as a sustainable approach that benefits our land, animals and our profitability. We set out first to be completely off-grid by producing all of our own electricity via solar power. We built our house using some of the best concepts in energy efficiency – passive solar, thermal mass, extreme insulation, meticulous air sealing, energy star appliances, and so on… The current step is farm sustainability – measuring it in terms of balancing our inputs vs. outputs on our property.
"The Grass is Greener on the Other Side”:
Coming from city life and so called “Corporate America” we dreamed of owning a farm and enjoying and living off our land. The term “the grass is greener on the other side” was used a lot. One day over lunch we decided to take the risk and leave our careers to see if the grass really was greener. Guess what? – It is! Every day on the farm - even when the weather is determined to make us miserable - is a "Greener Day" to us.
Farm Management:
We strongly believe that animals should be raised as naturally as possible. To do this we raise all of our animals on green pastures and woodlots and practice rotational grazing. As a result, our animals are happier, healthier, and extremely tasty while the vitality of the soil is increasing every year. We follow our farm slogan – “If the grass is greener… move the fence!”
